Are there any communities that exist developing games collaboratively?

I'm new to game development and would like to help out on a project already underway to learn the process from the inside. I'm not interested in making money, I'm just desiring to learn as well as contribute in some way to a project like this. Are there any groups like this? Preferably open source?
