Is ecomonic pain unavoidable?

I don't see a solution to our economic crisis without pain. Cutting spending will be painful. Yet, so will continuing to borrow and spend. I think reducing the size of government is inevitable. Creditors will get to the point where they will have no more confidence in our ability to manage our debt. Thus government will be restrained. The process is already underway on the State and local levels.
